One of my favorite parts of public relations is its ability to affect change. The world of Nonprofits thrives off of public relations, but most organizations do not have the resources to hire a specialist. While building a brand isn't really a priority in this area, getting a message out there is. Today we'll look at some ways you can use PR skills to help a cause that is important to you!
The key to running a successful nonprofit is to connect with the people who care about your cause. No matter how good your advertising or how large your reach, if you are not talking to the right people- you can't be affective. Ask yourself, who is affected by this issue- directly and indirectly? Who cares about this issue? Who should care about this issue? Depending on your cause, this could be half of the world or 600 people- but it is important to define your audience.

An affective message must have something that appeals to the audience. For most nonprofits, this appeal is going to be emotional and/or logical. However, in today's era of technology and short attention spans, your message also needs to be concise and get to the point. When developing the message, think about this...
Why do people care about this issue?
How will it directly affect people?
Is there something not a lot of people know about this issue, but should?
Honing in on these specific aspects will allow you to develop your appeal and refine your main points so you can affectively deliver them to your audience.
Once you have pin-pointed your target audience and defined your message, you can work on putting it out there. The way you connect with people depends on who you are trying to connect with. Think about the main way your target audience gets their information. Depending on your answer, you made need to adjust your message to fit the format. However, one of the cheapest, wide-reaching, and efficient ways to reach your audience is through social media. Almost everyone, at almost every stage of life has some type of social media. Creating content is easy on platforms like Canva and you get to keep your message concise. Plus, having profiles on different platforms not only allows people to connect with you, but to share your message!
